My name is Jennifer Cox, and I specialize in Therapeutic Massage. I work with an AMAZING chiropractor,Dr Debby Welshons-Heyano, at California Chiropractic Center in Carmichael. In the clinic I assist in rehabilitating all kinds of injuries and chronic pain issues by providing therapeutic massage along with chiropractic treatment.
I perform short, intense medical massages using Myofascial Release and PNF stretches, going deep into the muscle fibers to encourage the muscle to take it's proper shape. I have experience working on all kinds of pain, including lower pain back pain (L3 dysfunctions, Sciatica, Broad Ligament), Thoracic Outlet (pretty much any kind of shoulder pain), and neck/cervical spine injuries.
I also perform longer Eastern sessions, containing elements of Zen Shiatsu and Thai, which use compression, pointwork, and lots of assisted stretching. All sessions with me are based around breathing, because tense, sore muscles relax so much easier on a long, slow exhale.
How to Breathe
Deep breathing, slow and rythmic, with intentions focused on relaxing the muscles being worked, is essential to receive all the benefits of your massage. Shallow breathing places stress on the heart due to the additional breaths one must take to obtain enough oxygen. Maximum oxygen flow is important for all the tissues, but especially for carrying the message to the muscles being worked that "ItÂ’s time to relax, and heal". Diaphragmatic breathing is the best way to receive the maximum amount of oxygen. Practicing this exercise 3-5 minutes every day, morning and night, will not only increase the amount of useable oxygen being carried to your tissues and brain cells, but will also help strengthen and retrain the muscles in the diaphragm and abdomen .
Inhalation:
Place hands on stomach with fingers fanned out so you can feel your stomach move
Exhale last breath
As you begin to inhale, relax your stomach muscles and feel hands move outward as the belly extends
Keep filling up your chest cavity so that your chest and rib cage expand
Feel the top of your chest and your collarbones rise. Keep your belly out.
Exhale slowly
Exhalation:
Inhale slowly
Hold your breath for about one second at the top of your inhale
Slowly exhale through your nose. Do not exhale in one big burst, instead try to take twice as long to exhale as it took to inhale.
At the end of your exhale, pull your stomach in slightly to force all the air out.
Repeat process again, focusing on control and movement of the diaphragm.
As you begin this practice, it may take you 5 seconds to inhale, and perhaps only 6 seconds to exhale. However, if you do this every day, morning and night, for 3-5 minutes, in 4-6 weeks you will notice increased lung capacity, with much longer inhales and exhales. It may take 10 or even 20 seconds to inhale, and twice as long to exhale. This means that with every day that you practice this exercise, your lungs, diaphragm, and abdomen are getting stronger, and your tissues, muscles, and brain cells are receiving the maximum amount of oxygen for optimum health. When you receive therapeutic massage, you will notice your muscles responding to your longer exhales, releasing tension and relaxing long-held pain. In conjunction with chiropractic treatment, therapeutic massage helps because relaxed muscles help joints to adjust more easily and stay in place longer between adjustments.
